Erewhon Market

Santa Monica, CA

Pamela Burton & Company worked with Montalba Architects to transform the end of an enclosed audio/video store into a series of inviting outdoor seating areas for the Erewhon Market in Santa Monica. The street presence of this market was successfully transformed through the addition of seating along the facade and the peeling back of the west end of the building to create the shaded outdoor terraces. The layering of plants in a variety of colors and textures are a beautiful counterpoint to the simple concrete walls and paths. The outdoor seating areas are used heavily day and night and are a welcome complement to the bustling grocery inside.

Utilizing a culinary palette theme, the concrete planters that form the outdoor terraces are filled with Sages, Rosemary, Sweet Potato Vine and Agaves. A large Fruitless Olive tree provides additional shade and privacy in the upper most terrace.

Raised planters with wood bench seats line the store front along Wilshire and are filled with a colorful mix of chartreuse and burgundy. Vine trellises stretch up the front facade covered in Passion Flower Vines. On the east wall facing a driveway, Fig trees and Little Ollie shrubs provide a green facade.
