Ashley Ridge Residence

Hidden Hills, CA

PB&Co worked with architect Lise Matthews to design a landscape for a couple with three active children. The clients wanted a garden in which every part was usable with multiple seating areas, views, gardens, and places to play sports.

A circular driveway had been envisioned for the front but it was too inefficient, given the steep slope. The drive and parking area were kept at the side of the house. A new pedestrian approach was created with a stairway, and the hillside was covered with layers of drought tolerant shrubs. The stairway became a layered passageway in which the experience of climbing is complemented by hidden rest areas.

A guest house and additional structure were removed to create a large soccer lawn bordered by a gravel path on all four sides. From the lawn one ascends to the new pool area on the upper slope through a wisteria covered pergola. The pool and pool house was built on an upper pad that has become a center of activities. A row of crepe myrtle trees separates the main house and the pool house. The soccer quad and pool fit together with a vegetable garden, trampoline, tennis court, and orchard walk.
